Fionn is a Canadian based band that consists of twin sisters Alanna and Brianne Finn-Morris. They’ve released three full length albums and one EP prior to their current EP I Put My Makeup On. This EP is a collection of tracks that includes some previously released singles from the band. All of these songs will also be featured on their fourth full length album scum. which releases October 17, 2025.
Their single “Blow”, featured on the EP, reached #2 on the Billboard Canada Modern Rock Airplay chart. It’s sarcastic, witty, and really captures the fun aspects of story telling that these tracks have to them. “I’m at a party playing songs, the guy beside me nods and says I heard you on the radio…” Its accompanying music video also displays the band’s frustrations towards the music scene and what it can feel like performing as a newer band.
These story telling moments filled with sarcasm, annoyance, and relatability are what drew me into this EP. Not to mention the unique sound they have within the Alternative rock/ Indie genres. There is also an aspect of female empowerment in the project, which stands out with its title track I Put My Makeup On.
If you’re looking for something new and entertaining to listen to, I would give this EP, and eventual album, a listen.
I Put My Makeup On is a track about the complex dynamic between inner and outer beauty. This past week they released a music video for the track, which demonstrates how frustrating beauty expectations can be. The chorus is catchy and relatable, and the verses are full of conflicting feelings involved with masking your true self. The band released a series of clips for the track on Instagram, all of which give strong women support women vibes.
The song that sold me on this EP was the next track What Do You Do, which also has a funny video that starts with a skit. This skit demonstrates the theme of the song, which is “hating being asked what do you do” by men and any other condescending questions. As someone who dated for a bit recently, I find this song relatable and hilarious. I’m glad someone said it. My favorite lines are “I’ve got two jobs, she’s got three, keeps us in the house we pay to live in… My hobby’s getting high with Chloe, cause we work the week away.” It speaks for itself, and is some incredible sounding indie rock. Another amazingly catchy chorus and verses full of fun sing song storytelling.
The next track we have is Banchee. This track is full of imagery, and more of that storytelling that these tracks have about them. It’s also accompanied by a music video which shows the women out in nature just having a bit of fun dancing around. It’s the kind of video you dance with in your living room when no ones around. The final few verses going “Banchee, fuck off please” showcase the bands sarcasm and annoyance that shows up a lot on this EP. And, of course, it’s catchy.
Following up is the single BLOW. Which we already went over, but there’s still more we could cover from this track. It has big single energy, and is a really good song to start with if you’re looking to jump right in. My favorite lyric from it is “I’m screaming inside like all the time, like all the time!”. That is relatable. The frustration expressed in this song and video is what makes it such a strong single. The storytelling here is also hilarious, with imagery of a man frustrating the artists and her trying hard to keep her cool “Playing nice, knuckles white, I’m ’bout to blow”.
Snake Behavior is the fifth track on the EP. It opens with some great guitar riffs, and has a really fun music video to accompany it. It’s the most playful, imaginative, and unserious video yet. It’s what indie rock is all about. Doing as you please and not worrying about fitting in with what’s popular. The song has a strong chorus, some great guitar strumming throughout, and more of those fun talk sing moments.
Lastly, the EP ends with a song titled Bad at Being Casual. It’s storytelling about how hard it can be to keep a “casual” relationship well… casual. It talks about catching feelings and the crushing weight of being the one to fall harder in a sexual relationship. Casual is a complicated subject, and typically not portrayed realistically. This song does a good job at showing how confusing it can be to engage in hook up culture without commitment. How hard it is to meet someone, get close to them, and have no level of commitment to each other. “How do people do this? Is there something I’ve missed?” I think it’s a good message to get out there and get people thinking about how they feel in these situations.
This six track EP is a strong collection of indie rock songs. There’s great guitars, vocals, lyrics, storytelling, and videos. It has strong sarcasm, themes of women empowerment, some goofy moments, and a whole lot of catchy verses and choruses. It feels cohesive, and it makes me really excited for their full length album scum.
